As equestrians, we tend to dread the winter months - cold and damp days, dark nights, freezing temperatures, snow and mud! We think we have survived the winter and then it strikes back and merges into spring! This should not put a freeze on your riding ambitions. At Sue Carson Saddles, we believe that with the right preparation winter riding can be productive and enjoyable. Here's how to stay warm and safe during the winter months.
Your Saddle

The air within the panels is not impacted by the extremes in temperature, hot or cold, it is sealed in the individual airbags with a silicon gel and bung so it can not leak. A well-fitted Sue Carson Saddle helps maintain an even distribution of weight, so your horse can move comfortably despite cold, stiff muscles.
Regular adjustments ensure the perfect fit, especially as your horse's weight or coat changes throughout the season. Subtle body changes and the work load the horse is in can affect the fit of your saddle. That's why our team are always on-hand to refit your saddle, helping both you and your horse maintain optimal comfort all winter long.
Stay Safe
Shorter days and slippery surfaces demand extra caution. Remember to spread salt on any thoroughfares to prevent any slips, dig paths in the snow to make it easier to get about. If you heading out on any roads or trials ensure you are wearing reflective clothing to ensure you can be seen, especially in low light. Allow your warm-up sessions to be a bit longer to help your horses muscles acclimatise and to reduce the risk of injury. If you are wanting to turn your horse out in the snow, a great top tip is to rub Vaseline or equivalent on the sole of their hoof as this stops snow from balling up in their feet!
